If this is going to be an East Paris centered meetup, I'd recommend what is probably the least expensive accommodation you can find anywhere in the city:  Hôtel Vicq d'Azir

Last time I recommended it, a room went for €35 / night. It's perfectly adequate, no frills, yet well above hostel comfort levels, and is just a hop and a skip from the Gares du Nord and Est.

As an added extra, the hotel is kitty corner from the French Communist party headquarters : ), designed by Oscar Neimeyer [worth a visit] and is within walking distance from La Villette and the canal de l'Est.

It's a very lively part of town, with the Oberkampf quartier, its bars and music, and the Bouffes du Nord [a superb theater].
