Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

I was going to say (1) Good grief! (2) How de Gondiesque! and finally (3) What terrific work!

As one who admires the twists and turns of a good spy novel, these real life stories festooned with potent doses of somber intrigue performed in the back rooms of Europe's mysterious East hold me as spellbound as the players themselves.  Like Nomad, I plan to read it several times to gather in all the rich details.

You are of course referring to the real De Gondi, Cardinal de Retz, whose Memoires are a must for the literary-minded.

Ha, alas I referred to you Sir, but perhaps the good Cardinal would be more deserving of the comment.  Afterall, it appears he was a dedicated practicioner of intrigue and I can imagine that his memoires must reflect that.  I'll let you know my opinion once I've read them.  I see they are available here for download.

Yes, we have our share of intrigue in Washington, but nothing to compare with the 17th Century.
