Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Is it morally right to de-friend someone on Facebook for saying that "Hitler created a system of socialised medicine, therefore he was a Socialist, therefore, Obama is a Nazi"?

I guess that means I shouldn't feel bad about feeling no inclination to explain to this person what "socialism" means.

Not at all. Any explanation that does not use the words "evil" "heinous" and/or "godless" will simply meet with blank puzzlement (or possibly psychotic outburst).

Hitler was a socialist.

National Socialism -> Socialist.

You can't argue with the facts.

Well, you can. You can even argue with someone who believes this and who claims to have a postgrad degree in Germanic Studies, as I - rather pointlessly - tried to recently.

But then she also believes Paul McCartney was replaced by a clone because the real Paul was a threat to the Illuminati. So I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised.

That's silly.  American schools don't have degrees in Germanic studies.

You can even argue with someone who believes this and who claims to have a postgrad degree in Germanic Studies ...

Ya can send 'em to school, pay for the tuition, buy 'em the books and what do they do?

Eat the pages.

Granted Germanic Studies can be anything from proto-Germanic through the Jastdorf culture on through the Roman Iron Age, and yadda-yadda-yadda ending up in Modern Times with the information gained varying according to what period one is studying ...

Well, quite. Although in this case there may have been significant toxic borrowing.

Maybe you should tell this person that Hitler loved his mother and was kind to dogs. So those are definitely two things to avoid at all costs.
