Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

BTW, I see an underlying theme to this; namely where the concept of "white" meets upon the continuity of actual skin colours.

If you go from, say, Munich towards the East or from Warshaw to the South, you'll find a continuity of on average ever darker skins. Locally, everywhere, you will find most of the population considering themselves "white", Gypsies "brown"; and you'll find at least a significant minority who considers the neighbour to the East/South "brown". (Of course, when these people move to the West/North, they are in for a surprise.)

To be considered "brown", apparently clothing suffices. This is something sociologists studying Gypsies emphasize; and something I can confirm from personal experience by again citing that I was taken for a Turk (considered "brown" by most West Europeans) when fresh in West Germany.

You were taken to be a Turk because of the clothes you wore?!? That tickles the imagination - what were you wearing that apparently made you stood out?

Remember I came from beyond the Iron Curtain. I wasn't wearing Western clothes then in (i.e. sneakers, blue jeans and colorful T-shirt), but clothes that must have been seen as shabby and poor in comparison. Hair, too. But, I should add speaking an unrecognisable foreign tongue as a factor. (All of these changed after a few months.)

I had no idea you left befire the Iron curtain fell. That certainly sounds like a diary worthy story. :)

I haven't "left" -- I was in then West Germany for two years, while my father worked there, then returned :-)

BTW, I remember the absolute bafflement of a classmate-friend and his parents: "You go back? Why don't you just stay? Why go back there into communism?"...

I wonder how much of the immigration fear comes from people completely unable to conceive people wanting to remain in their country rather than emigrate...
