Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

An opinion poll by Millward Brown/Landsdowne research is being reported on Irish radio - no on line source available yet.

It reports 53% in favour of Lisbon (an increase of 6% in two months) and 26% against.  Similar to the 2:1 margins in other recent polls.

Nama is considered the right solution to the banking crisis by 32% of respondents, and considered wrong by 39%.

A clever production although calling it a masterpiece of propaganda may be carrying it a bit far. One can only look forward to an adapted version of it being used in a future UK referendum campaign.

Whoever wrote it knows Ireland well but not well enough.

It has an incidental benefit. It should set the debate in Ireland finally in an appropriate European context, something that the benighted elites in Ireland have failed to do since Ireland joined the European Community.

Unfortunately debates like this always get reduced to "what's in it for us".  I've written several LTE's stressing the EU context, only some of which have been published.

As it happens, the Daily Telegraph, of all papers, is running an excellent series on Europe at the moment. Ruth Dudley-Edwards hits every nail on the head that I would wish to (but without her talent).

Bollocks to her generally, and specifically:

Some serious voices, like the multi-millionaire businessman Declan Ganley, of Libertas, who fronted the last No campaign and is pro-EU but anti-Lisbon

If you lack her talent, I recommend giving up typing.

Declan Ganley as a serious voice and Kevin Myers as a moral giant are a couple of nails I'd rather miss. I'll pass on the stereotypes about the Irish (not being of that persuasion).

As for the Telegraph's series, it's mostly (predictably) Europhobic under a veneer of informative fairness. A handful of examples: John Petley of the Bruges Group's railways drivel, xenophobic nonsense about flashers in Paris, Foreign Office bile about Brussels, how the EU is driving the UK to bankruptcy, etc.

If it is a veneer, its a pretty thick one.

The responses have thought me that I should not mix comment and irony on this blog.

It seems to me that the Tories are waking up to the fact that Cameron risks being the turkey. The penny seems to have dropped even with Kevin Myers. And I did like the nice YES photograph, with the children.

The responses have nothing to do with your mix of comment and irony, to which you're welcome, but other users' frank opinion of what you suggested we look at.

Great to have met you in Copenhagen, today, Jake.  (I'll have to write a diary about our discussion on the aerodynamics of flying pigs).
