Lying About The Gaza Flotilla Disaster | Political Correction

The first thing you need to know about the Gaza flotilla disaster is that the intention of the activists on board the ships was to break the Israeli blockade.  Delivering the embargoed goods was incidental.

In other words, the activists were like the civil rights demonstrators who sat down at segregated lunch counters throughout the South and refused to leave until they were served.  Their goal was not really to get breakfast.  It was to end segregation.

That fact is so obvious that it is hard to believe that the "pro-Israel" lobby is using it as an indictment.

Of course the goal of the flotilla was to break the blockade.  Of course Martin Luther King provoked the civil authorities of the South to break segregation.  Of course the Solidarity movement used workers' rights as a pretext to break Soviet-imposed Communism.

It was also exactly the tactic used by Zionist pressure groups (aka terrorists such as the Stern Gang/Irgun) in 1947 when they organised the Aliyah Bet ships to break a British blockade of Palestine to prevent settler groups adding to the troubles already happening.

All were turned around but one, the Exodus, became a rallying cry when the British boarded it and were violently resisted resulting in 3 refugee deaths.

Ironies compound.

You realize that your first paragraph links the Exodus to the terrorists, and hence, maybe, links the flotilla to other terrorists. I doubt you meant this irony. In any case, the Palmach was in charge of the Exodus, not the Irgun or Stern Gang.

Palmach may have been in charge of the ships, but they were responding to developments in Palestine being driven by terrorists. That is the linkage I implied, if not the one you assumed.

tbh I don't think there's too much merit in examining the rights and wrongs of what happened back then, it is pretty much a done deal. But it's sometimes worth highlighting that some situations now aren't so different from then, yet attitude is very different when the boot is on the other foot..

Chosen, but Not Special | Op-Ed - Michael Chabon - NYTimes.com
... A stupid Jew is like a hole in the pocket of your pants, there every time you put them on, always forgotten until the instant your quarters run clattering across the floor.

<...>

Now, with the memory of the Mavi Marmara fresh in our minds, is the time for Jews to confront, at long last, the eternal truth of our stupidity as a people, which I will stack, blunder for blunder, against that of any other nation now or at any time living on this planet of folly, in this world of Chelm. Now is the moment to acknowledge that the 62-year history of Israel, like the history of the Jewish people and of the human race, has been from the beginning a record of glory and fiasco, triumph and error, greatness and meanness, charity and crime.

The past two decades in particular have illustrated to Jews and to the world a painful premise, but one that was implicit in the Zionist idea from the beginning: If, in the words of the 1948 Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel, the Jewish people have a natural right "to be masters of their own fate, like all other nations, in their own sovereign state," then the inescapable codicil of this natural inheritance is that the Jewish people, "like all other nations," are every bit as capable of barbarism and stupidity ...
