I knew an Iranian Jew whose father when to Berlin for medical treatment in the late 1930s without having any idea what was going on there (thanks to an Iranian name, the Nazis had no idea he was Jewish). If even the Jews had no idea back then, I'm not surprised that many non-Jews are ignorant about it these days.
