Right-populist party Fidesz with its supermajority in parliament is building an autocracy apace, and won't suffer occasional criticism from abroad. The latest scandal in Fidesz-land concerns the leader of the Greens in the EP, Daniel Cohn-Bendit.

Since then, the local right-wing media (which, like in Berlusconiland, now includes public media) fires away at him. This included anti-semitic attacks, and of course, the paedophile accusations were dug up.

The public TV's news confronted Cohn-Bendit himself at an event in Budapest, and aired a news clip claiming that Cohn-Bendit "fled" the questioning. However, an internet news site got hand of the full video, and Cohn-Bendit didn't just answer, but remained in the room for another 30 minutes, when he left to reach his plane...

  2. falling apart?
  3. lying in broken pieces on the floor?
  4. same as it always was?

Hungary is the lead story right now on the Süddeutsche website, on the occasion of a concert by András Schiff. He thinks that the lack of much coverage outside Hungary is partly due to the language barrier.
SZ: Am 18. April bekommt Ungarn eine neue Verfassung. Die Präambel heißt "Nationales Glaubensbekenntnis", darin werden der ungarische Nationalstolz und der Stolz auf das tausendjährige ungarische Reich beschworen.
On April 18 Hungary gets a new constiution. The preamble speaks of the pride in the 1000-year Hungarian empire....

taz repeatedly writes more in-depth articles about the situation in Hungary, but criticising an EPP government is less 'in' elsewhere.
