Muslim Brotherhood offices torched, Morsi on defensive - EGYPT - FRANCE 24

As enraged demonstrators torched Muslim Brotherhood offices in several Egyptian cities, a defiant Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi defended his recent decree granting himself sweeping powers before a crowd of supporters outside the presidential palace in Cairo Friday.

"Political stability, social stability and economic stability are what I want and that is what I am working for," said Morsi. "I have always been, and still am, and will always be, God willing, with the pulse of the people, what the people want, with clear legitimacy" he said from a podium before thousands of supporters.

Sunday morning TV ... MSNBC ... Up w/ Chris Hayes; discussing Morsi attempting to establish himself as absolute dictator, but then someone comments, "How does he enforce this?" and it always comes down to who has the guns and how will they use them.

Love this species!

They tried to assimilate me. They failed.

Major test for ceasefire after Israeli troops shoot farmer dead and wound twenty others - Middle East - World - The Independent

Anwar Abdelhadi Quiedh became the first `martyr' of peacetime Gaza today, shot dead by Israeli troops who also wounded 20 others, leading to protests by Palestinians and posing a significant test of the ceasefire signed just 36 hours previously.

Mr Quiedh was in a group of 300 men, most of them farmers, who had moved into fields near the border after hearing on radio and television that the peace deal allowed them to reclaim land which had been declared a buffer zone by the Israelis.

It is indeed the case that the accord signed in Cairo to end the latest conflict provides for Palestinian farmers to cultivate the stretches along the frontier and fishermen to take their catches in waters from where they have been hitherto banned.

But exactly when these measure are to be implemented remains unclear - as 21 year old Mr Quiedh and the other casualties found out to their cost.

Congo suspends army chief for arming rebel groups - DR CONGO - FRANCE 24

Congo's president has suspended the army's chief of staff, following the publication of a United Nations report which reveals that Gen. Gabriel Amisi oversaw a criminal network selling arms to rebels in the country's troubled east.

The firing of the general indicates that Congo is finally getting tough on its notoriously dysfunctional and internally divided army. It comes as an eight-month-old rebel group, made up of soldiers who defected from the army, pushed beyond Goma, the bustling regional capital of eastern Congo, which fell to the fighters earlier this week.

On Friday, M23 rebels patrolled the town of Sake, the next town on the road south from Goma. They manned checkpoints, drank vodka in local bars and let the corpses of Congolese soldiers rot in the streets. One of the soldier's bodies bore an execution-style bullet wound to the temple.

Racist rants mar suburban bus ride - THE AGE

Commuters were subjected to a horrifying display of racism and threats of violence on a Melbourne bus when a French woman was abused for singing in her native tongue.

Video footage of the incident, taken by Melbourne stand-up comedian Mike Nayna, shows three people -- including a man pushing a pram -- threatening the woman, calling her a c---, a dog and a bitch.

"Speak English or die, motherf---er," a middle-aged man shouted at the woman, who was sitting at the back of the bus.

He later continued: "Everyone on the bus wants to kill ya! You're gonna have to get off eventually bitch. You worked that out yet?"
