I've never understood this phenomenon in 'Schland, but i admit to cracking up the first time i watched it Silvester 2001/2002. Partly because it's truly dumb slapstick done brilliantly, partly because the premise is so absurd... and partly because i couldn't believe my in-laws were simply guffawing.

(My father-in-law had been in a Russian prison camp for many years after the war, as a doctor even caring for the guards. My mother-in-law spent her teenage years in a British confinement camp in Tanzania. They likely appreciated the absurdity.)

Haven't seen it every year since, but when i do, i can't tell if i'm laughing at myself or the show.
