Greek police union wants to arrest EU/IMF officials | Reuters

Feb 10 (Reuters) - Greece's largest police union has threatened to issue arrest warrants for officials from the country's European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders for demanding deeply unpopular austerity measures.

In a letter obtained by Reuters on Friday, the Federation of Greek Police accused the officials of "...blackmail, covertly abolishing or eroding democracy and national sovereignty" and said one target of its warrants would be the IMF's top official for Greece, Poul Thomsen.

The threat is largely symbolic since legal experts say a judge must first authorize such warrants, but it shows the depth of anger against foreign lenders who have demanded drastic wage and pension cuts in exchange for funds to keep Greece afloat.

I think wheter it is symbolic or not hinges mainly on if the police union carries it out. The legal experts appear not to have been confronted by the very real executive powers of police, even when it is not backed by the laws.

I would like to see nothing more than for the police to arrest these people.  That would be a moment for the ages.  A true flag in the fucking ground.  Get to it, coppers.

It could end up like a Western Movie: sheriff arrests loathed villain; mob of angry citizens storm jail and lynch villain. Not exactly the preferred outcome, but perhaps preferable to the outcome the villain had in mind. When justice is perverted by the mighty for too long and to too great an extent on rare occasions it blows up on them. But most often it is another small group of villains who profit by taking the place of the former group.
