Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

I am kind of wondering who the heck would do this. 9/11, the targets had a certain logic to them. Military command, civilian leadership, economic supremacy - they were picked for their symbolism, their function, and who was there. Domestic terrorists of various political stripes? Nuts, but there is still some rhyme and reason to what they choose to blow up.

But a marathon? Say.. what?

Patriots' Day (officially Patriots' Day in Massachusetts[1] and Patriot's Day in Maine[2]) is a civic holiday commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. These were the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. It is observed on the third Monday in April in Massachusetts[3] and Maine[4] (once part of Massachusetts), and is a public school observance day in Wisconsin[5]. Florida law also encourages people to celebrate it, though it is not treated as a public holiday.[6] Observances and re-enactments of these first battles of the American Revolution occur annually at Lexington Green in Lexington, Massachusetts, (around 6:00 am) and The Old North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts, (around 9:00 am). In the morning, mounted re-enactors (National Lancers - Massachusetts) with state police escorts retrace the rides of Paul Revere and William Dawes, calling out warnings the whole way.

hmm British loyalists?

The use of gunpowder (yes, actual gunpowder, like they used to use in guns) points to a very amateur operation.

My guess is either militia types or, if Islamic, some nutjob kid from UMass or something who got into radicalism via the Internet.

Or some kind of anti-tax thing - it was tax day, Boston was the site of the tea party, and it's the 100th anniversary (to the year anyway) of the 16th amendment, which gave congress the ability to charge income taxes.

you are the media you consume.

Right.  I keep coming back to Boston and Tax Day and Patriots' Day.

The other point: It doesn't sound like these were very sophisticated devices, which leads me to think it's probably not international terrorism.

The modus operandi is not unlike AQ: it's designed for maximum carnage.

But also, the lack of any acknowledgement or claims of authorship points to a certain "professionalism" in the culprits.

Yeah, but the AQs of the world love taking credit for this stuff.  Hell, the Islamic crazies probably take credit even when they don't do it.

It's the domestic ones who keep their mouths shut.

It took -- what, five years to get Rudolph?  And McVeigh was only caught so quickly because of traffic-related asshattery.

April 19th was the day the Waco seize was ended.  That outraged a certain rightwing crazy and was his rationale for bombing the OKC federal building on April 19th.

Rightwing nutters in this country confuse the Civil War with the Revolutionary War.

As I pointed out, the marathon was dedicated to the Newtown victims. Some of their families have been speaking out in favour of tougher gun laws and have been attacked for that on Fox.  This might explain it.

Or an Olympic Park? Just because reasonable people can't see why a marathon doesn't mean that nobody can, does it?

My theory is still that an episode of Rizzoli & Isles inspired this.

True, although the international element of the Olympics makes that one a little bit easier to figure, I think.  (Granted, always much easier long after the fact when the killer has already revealed his motive.)  That one would've suggested some kind of militiaman kind of crazy (New World Order, UN, global communism/lizard people, etc).

Marathons are more city things, and if a Rudolph type were going to bomb a marathon (at least one in the states), surely NYC would be the one to expect it to occur at?

Columbine, Waco, Oklahoma City, all the same week. The timing makes it seem like domestic terrorism. But the target and the bombs make it seem foreign.

Even by his own standard of being an anti-abortion and anti-gay warrior, the Olympic Park bombing was irrational.  It was about blowing people up and getting attention for himself.
