Luis Suarez 'bite': Uruguay striker in World Cup controversy

(BBC Sport) - Suarez pushed his head towards Chiellini in the penalty area just before Diego Godin's Uruguay winner.

Chiellini then pulled his shirt down to show the referee an apparent mark on his shoulder made during the clash. "It was ridiculous not to send Suarez off. It is clear, clear-cut," Chiellini told Italian television station Rai TV.

"Then there was the obvious dive afterwards because he knew very well that he did something that he shouldn't have done."

After the clash between the players, Suarez went to ground holding his mouth, apparently suggesting he had been elbowed. As the Italian defender ran after referee Marco Rodriguez, Uruguay forward Gaston Ramirez attempted to get Chiellini to cover his shoulder.

Fifa will wait to receive the referee's report before deciding whether to take action against Suarez. "We are awaiting the official match reports and will gather all the necessary elements in order to evaluate the matter," a spokeswoman told BBC Sport.

There's something wrong in his head. It's not a normal reaction, it's like there's a bad bit of code that routes to a weird place.

I see it as a premeditated and tried trick (in contrast to the Italian worthless impulse). We know that Suarez would do anything for a win. A bite brings the other player (and possibly not only him) out of concentrated mental state, to a provoked physical state.

It is an extreme tactic which is far more likely to result in a sending off than any strategic advantage. If it was a neutral thing just to mess with your opponents concentration then you could understand it.

He got banned for 7 and then 10 matches on the previous occasions. That's not just a bit of foul play, it's a serious offense which conveys no real gain. I can't see suarez playing again in the competition. I can't see that as worth any imagined gain.

(As the caption of the picture.)

Suarez knows what he is doing - trust him :-]  Uruguay needed a goal - they got a goal. When was the last time FIFA "rectified" a refereeing situation?

I still don't think it's like the handball in the last world cup. that ensured his side weren't eliminated.

This game there were still 10 minutes to go, so anything could have happened. godin could still have scored that goal.

No, I think that for some reason his reason was scrambled, a "plus" became a "minus" and he goes berzerk for 15 seconds. Now he's out of the world cup, possibly an international ban for many many games. That's not worth having.

He's a crafty so and so and very fond of very cynical gamesmanship. But this crosses a line from securing advantage into something deranged. Which is what it is; deranged

The handbal did not ensure anything, as penalties are usually scored. Thus Suarez likes to gamble a lot of for a dubios gain. Speaking of penalties - maybe he hoped to provoke a real elbow today.

By the way, Greece is an European powerhouse again at the moment :-) They would meet Costa Rica in the next round.

See my earlier comment - FIFA disciplinary committee must act.

FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings over Luis Suárez 'bite'

FIFA's disciplinary panel "is responsible for sanctioning serious infringements which have escaped the match officials' attention," the governing body said in a statement.

"Any type of proof may be produced," FIFA noted, including "reports from referees, declarations from the parties and witnesses, material evidence, audio or video recordings."

FIFA set a World Cup precedent for using video review in 1994.

Then, in a quarterfinal, Italy defender Mauro Tassotti's elbow to the face of Spain's Luis Enrique escaped the referee's attention. FIFA later banned Tassotti for eight international matches.

World Cup 2014: Disgraceful Luis Suarez must face record ban after biting incident

Suarez certainly hasn't been helped by the apologists who blame anyone else for his every misdemeanor. Excuses have been made for his misconduct. They cannot be anymore, even by those whose love of his talent and desire for his prolific scoring to continue have caused them to mislay their moral compass.

If FIFA is to have any credibility, it has to issue a severe suspension. It could carry on far into the next year of international soccer. It might even entail a ban from all soccer, impacting his club career. His latest misdemeanor did not occur in Liverpool's colors, but the club has indulged him too often. Judging from coach Oscar Tabarez's post-match comments, so has Uruguay.
