The Oxford English Dictionary Just Added 'Woke.' It's Older Than You Might Think - Time

Slang is almost always older than you think. English speakers have been calling stylish people "fly" since at least 1953. Though it's everywhere now, the first known use of OMG goes back to 1917. And the Oxford English Dictionary's latest update shows that the same is true of woke: The term, which has spread virally in recent years after being embraced by the Black Lives Matter movement, has been used to describe those who are aware since the early 1960s.

Here's how the OED defines it.

woke, adjective: Originally: well-informed, up-to-date. Now chiefly: alert to racial or social discrimination and injustice; frequently in stay woke.

The OED added that word, along with scores of others, in its quarterly update this June. Before editors add any word, they dig to find the earliest examples they can of it being used.

The Hill team reports on DICTION.
A journalism stylebook is supposed to provide universal guidelines for writers when it comes to stylistic things like punctuation, capitalization, and so on. This includes choosing certain words over others. The original intent of word preference was to use words that are more neutral than others.

"Censors" Rather Than Editors Quash Free Speech Rights?
Even when individual authors do not adhere to the bias of AP Style, it often doesn't matter. If they submit an article to a mainstream media outlet, they will likely see their words edited to conform. A pro-life author who submits a piece taking a position against abortion will see the words "pro-life" changed to "anti-abortion," because the AP Stylebook instructs, "Use anti-abortion instead of pro-life and pro-abortion rights instead of pro-abortion or pro-choice.

And there's one more problem. Journalists don't always use the AP Stylebook when it would "water down" words that favor liberals. For example, the guide instructs journalists to "try to avoid describing political leanings." However, journalists usually ignore the guide in referring to Republicans as "right wing." At the same time, they almost never describe Democrats as "left-wing."

Well, very few, probably less than 50, Congressional Democrats are really 'left wing'. Neo-liberals, the majority, are NOT 'Left wing' in any traditional sense, though they try hard to redefine terms. Anything to be able to keep taking the money.

Schumer, Gillibrand Co-Sponsor Senate Bill That Would Make Boycotting Israel A Felony

Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand are among 43 U.S. Senators who have co-sponsored the Anti-Israel Boycott Act [H.R. 1697/S. 720], a bill that the ACLU wote the First Amendment" in a letter to lawmakers urging them to oppose the bill.
The bill  seeks to expand  the ExportnAdministration  Act of 1979 and the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945 which,  among  other things,  prohibit  U.S. persons from complying with a foreign  governme nt's request to boycott a country friendly
to the U.S.

[...]
Violators of the law "would be subject to a minimum civil penalty of $250,000 and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison" according to the ACLU's letter.
[...]
Speaking in the Senate on French President Emmanuel Macron's support of Israel earlier this week, Senator Schumer criticized the BDS movement as anti-Semitic.

"Anti-Zionism, unfortunately, continues to bubble up in many different forms. There is perhaps no greater example than the pernicious effort to delegitimize Israel through boycotts, divestment, and sanctions. The BDS movement is a deeply biased campaign that I would say, in similar words to Mr. Macron, is a 'reinvented form of anti-Semitism' because it seeks to impose boycotts on Israel and not on any other nation."

Quite the authoritarian pivot, wouldn't you agree? I can't wait to see what the Russians will force Teh DERPs do next!

Iceland Is Sick of Tourists' Bad Behavior - CityLab
Icelanders repeatedly warn visitors of what might seem the obvious dangers of approaching crashing surf or water at 175 degrees Fahrenheit, often to little avail. There's more to Iceland visitors' poor behavior than simple lack of preparation, however. The Icelandic public has been losing it recently over visitors' bad behavior, sick of people who treat the country as some sort of fire-and-ice theme park where elves arrive to magically tidy up their mess.

Barely a week goes by without a tale of inappropriate public pooping going viral. Indeed, this story of tourists in East Iceland using a porta-potty as a luggage locker suggests restrooms themselves are among the few public places to be spared the wrath of visitors' bowels. Iceland's sparse population might possibly be leading tourists to bad behavior because they take perceptions of its emptiness to extremes and assume there's almost nobody there.

Although Novalja, and in particular Zrće beach, attracts young tourists from all parts of the world, the town's Mayor, Ante Dabo, has had enough of one particular group - the Brits.
After Brexit, it should be easy to keep them out of the country.

The problem seems to have solved itself - and they are not happy. Grapevine
In recent months, the tourism industry has started to experience something unheard of just 12 months ago--mass cancellations.

The main culprit in the wave of cancellations is the ever strengthening króna, which together with already high prices has made visiting the country unfeasible for a large segment of travellers. The króna appreciated 10.6% last year and you'd have to go back to 1934 to find a period when the króna increased more in value.
