So, if Iran appeal to the majority shi'ite population, then those interests would be inconvenienced to a greater or lesser extent by terroristic elements.

If the leadership were Shi-ite, like say in Syria, then a Sunni people rising up would be freedom fighters. Unless they're the wrong kind of sunnis, in which case we'd try to bomb all of them
