Ireland employs an unhealthy hybrid private insurance/state benefit model of healthcare, but in many western European democracies, private insurance is a luxury only the super rich require. Standard state benefits are more than adequate to meet virtually all real healthcare needs. Even in Ireland, if you are really ill, it's best to go to a public hospital, as they employ the best protocols and don't cherry pick only money making procedures.
