Judge argues that Atlanta is poised to compete with Boston, Los Angeles, and New York to fill out the US's top three tech cities behind Silicon Valley, thanks to its airport ("I can leave here at 10am and be at a lunch meeting in San Francisco," he boasts), bevy of Fortune 500 corporations and concentration of engineering talent - in addition to Georgia Tech, the city is home to Georgia State University, Emory and the historically black colleges and universities Morehouse, Spelman and Clark Atlanta. But in the early 2000s, Judge says, investors would hear that a company was from Atlanta and immediately say, "No." By 2007 or 2008, the investors might take a meeting, but they would demand that the company relocate to California. "Now they're saying, `We'll come to you.'"

For startup founders at The Gathering Spot or digitalundivided, that "business model" simply isn't an option. Not only will no one write them those checks, but they usually come from families without the generational wealth to support them through revenue-free explorations.
Notice, there's no vibranium --scale (g)-- for the dilemma posed by this story. Evidently not much has changed in VC funding (cash to burn) for black-owned business pitch (tech sector and others) since I looked into dotcom-dip "opportunities" 15 years ago... although "incubators" are nearly a dime/doz (often est'd. with 503(c) trust funding, possibly seed buyer market) and the pop of "minority" coders has increased significantly, while corp hires hover in low single digits.

Carnell did hilarious casts on Being The Next Bill Gates and Kanye's "business model" which neatly illustrate prerequisites in this lottery:"generational wealth to support them". As usual notable exceptions prove the rule.
