Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.
I'm not sure it matters all that much whether the UUP put up a candidate against Nigel Dodds of the DUP. The issue is that Dodds led the hardline Brexit campaign against Theresa May's Brexit plan, which has now resulted in Boris Johnson's Brexit plan which puts a border down the Irish sea to the horror of all unionists, not just Remainers.

Those unionists would probably vote for Alliance almost as easily as they would vote for the UUP, and Alliance have a credible candidate for the seat, Nuala McAllister, Finucane's predecessor as Belfast mayor. With Alliance's vote growing in any case, Dodd's 2000 vote margin over John Finucane should not be a big mountain to climb provided Finucane had maintain Sinn Fein's vote share.
