Trump to Sign FIRST PHASE of China Trade Deal in January
"As part of the deal, China has agreed to purchase agricultural goods from the United States, while the U.S. agreed to hold off on tariffs on $160 billion in Chinese imports that were scheduled to snap in place on Dec. 15."
ahem
"'I will be signing our VERY LARGE and comprehensive Phase One Trade Deal with China on January 15,' Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. 'The ceremony will take place at the White House. High level representatives of China will be present. At a later date I will be going to Beijing where talks will begin on PHASE TWO!'"

Deadlines come, deadlines go.

How well are US JCPOA sanctions pacifying S. Korea's trade balances? Well, given official 2019 recession warning and ahh "export controls, Kim Jong-un makes no mention of inter-Korean relations in 2020 vision: "The 'omission' of any reference to inter-Korean relations has its positive and negative aspects."

The thing to do, really, is deride "intuitutive," illogical Asian authoritarianism and currency manipulation.

"We will be having a signing ceremony, yes," Trump said. "We will ultimately, yes, when we get together. And we'll be having a quicker signing because we want to get it done. The deal is done, it's just being translated right now."

But there was little sign that the two leaders were going to meet and Chinese state media has suggested that Xi did not intend to sign the deal in person.

Hopes for spike in U.S. farm exports to China [are] dim ahead of trade deal signing, 9 Jan
U.S. President Donald Trump has touted the prospect of China buying $40 BILLION in U.S. farm products in 2020 as a PILLAR  of the "Phase 1" agreement aimed at defusing the bitter trade war that erupted between the world's two largest economies in 2018. ...

But Chinese forward purchases of Brazilian soybeans, including about a dozen bulk vessels this week, or about 800,000 tonnes, are raising doubts Chinese buyers will have an appetite for vast supplies of U.S. soybeans once the deal is done.
[...]
"The key factor for crushers is whether the beans are cheap, even with a trade deal. If the beans from South America are cheap, buyers will go for South America," one of the traders said.

No details about the targeted $40 BILLION shopping list have been published, and China has not confirmed any purchase commitment. The U.S. grain and livestock market rally that followed the Dec. 13 announcement of a trade deal has faded.

U.S. Treasury drops China currency manipulator label ahead of trade deal signing
"Mnuchin had accused China of deliberately holding down the value of its yuan currency to create an unfair trade advantage, just hours after President Donald Trump, angered at the lack of progress in trade negotiations, had also accused China of manipulating its currency."

Switzerland rejects U.S. allegations of currency manipulation
"Switzerland's inclusion in the U.S. Treasury's list, alongside countries including Germany [?!], South Korea and Japan, would have no immediate consequences, the statement added."

Grassley says he wants to REIN IN [presidential] tariff powers
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said Wednesday that he wanted to advance legislation reining in presidential authority on tariffs in 2020.

"That's been a goal of mine and is still a goal," Grassley said of legislation to reform section 232 of the 1962 Trade Expansion Act, which President Trump has used to impose major tariffs on close U.S. trade partners.
