UK police use of facial recognition tests public's tolerance of ...
"... video surveillance, with one of the highest densities of CCTV cameras in the world. Cameras have been used in public spaces for decades by SECURITY FORCES fighting threats from the Irish Republican Army and, more recently, domestic terror attacks after Sept. 11, 2001. The RECENT ADVANCES in surveillance technology mean a new wave of facial recognition systems will put the public's acceptance to the test."

LEAK: Commission considers facial recognition ban in AI 'white paper', 17 Jan
The European Commission is considering measures to impose a temporary ban on facial recognition technologies used by both public and private actors, according to a draft white paper on Artificial Intelligence obtained by EURACTIV.

If implemented, the plans could throw current AI projects off course in some EU countries, including Germany's wish to roll out automatic facial recognition at 134 railway stations and 14 airports. France also has plans to establish a legal framework permitting video surveillance systems to be embedded with facial recognition technologies.

EU drops idea of facial recognition ban in public areas, 29 Jan
"The revised proposal, part of a package of measures to address the challenges of AI, could still be tweaked as the commission is currently seeking feedback before it presents its plan on Feb. 19."

AI facial recognition software is another example of the technologically illiterate falling for SillyCon Valley bullshit.  Not only is it not ready for prime time there's no evidence - given the known limitations of the underlying tech - it ever will be.
