It looks like Sweden's self-styled "feminist" government will now finally outlaw polygamy. This is a result of instructions from parliament to the previous goverment (also the Social Democrats) in 2017. It's already illegal to marry more than one person while in Sweden, the new proposal will apply to marriages entered into abroad.

Morgan Johansson, the Minister of Justice, is trying to make it look like this is something he's been fighting for. In a vote two years ago, however, his own Social democrats, along with the Greens and the Left (the former communists) voted against a similar proposal, which included not recognizing foreign marriages to people under 18.

The Social Democrat and the Greens stand to lose significant voter groups by this proposal.

For historical context, or hilarity:
About two years ago Socialstyrelsen (Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare) released a digital version of a pamphlet with information for those married to someone under 18 ("Information till dig som är gift med ett barn "). It was quickly withdrawn after criticism from most political parties, and I don't believe it was ever printed. The word "prison" does not appear anywhere in the text.
