Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.
As an undergraduate research associate for the Oklahoma State University Aquatic Biology Lab I got to see one such ecological remedy in action. About 30 miles north of Stillwater was a Phillips refinery south of Ponca City. South of that was a series of ten ponds. Refinery effluent flowed into pond 1, in which almost noting grew, and emerged eventually from pond 10 as water in which fish could live. We would drag a row boat between ponds and sample sediment from each pond. Then I would get to sort the larvae by length and species and count them. My fingers cracked from the exposure to formaldehyde, but the process was instructive.
