Senate defeats Green New Deal, as Democrats call vote a 'sham'
Aiming to avoid an intraparty fight on the issue, 43 Democrats - including those who introduced the Green New Deal - voted "present."
[...]
Democrats have countered by calling McConnell's maneuver a "sham," saying the vote was held without any hearings or expert testimony, all to scuttle meaningful legislative efforts on climate change.

"McConnell tried to rush the #GreenNewDeal straight to the floor without a hearing," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "The real question we should be asking: Why does the Senate GOP refuse to hold any major hearings on climate change?"

srsly?
"We don't know if we can get to net-zero carbon emissions in 10 years, but we should certainly try," Gillibrand said at a pro-Green New Deal news conference in front of the Capitol. "Why not let this be a measure of how great we are as a nation?"

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters Tuesday that McConnell's "stunt is backfiring" and that it was becoming clear that "the Republican Party is way behind the times on clean energy."
[...]
The main Senate sponsor of the Green New Deal, Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., was unapologetic about the broad scope of his proposal. "It is the national-security, economic, health care and moral issue of our time," he said at Tuesday's press event.

It will take a clear and consequential environmental disaster that directly affects republican strongholds before the US of A changes its mind on climate change. Which, of course, is a bit of a problem because by then it will be too late.*

"It will take a clear and consequential environmental disaster..." and even then, one cannot be certain that either faction of the uniparty is willing and able to produce MEANINGFUL studies on the causes of or remedies for the disaster.

Because 22 hearings in one chamber alone over 3 months is never enough.

Do the facts need repeating? Congress cannot enact any bill without passage by both chambers.

Clear and present disaster is happening right now in the Midwest.

Nothing is going to be done to prepare for Climate Change.  To do so would put a massive dent in the profits of the automotive (~20% of the US economy, when all is said and done) and energy (~8% of GDP) industries and negatively affect the FIRE sector (~20% of GDP) in ways too complicated for me to sort out.

You mean the flooding of huge expanses of farmland, the ruination of thousands of drinking water wells, and the damage to Offutt Air Force Base? The expected increase in the price of meat, to the tune of $1 per pound? The $0.20 per gallon increase in the price of gasoline due to disruption of the ethanol supply? All that stuff?

It's just regular weather. Ask anybody.

I was thinking of the Tragedy of the flooding of the Oakland High School football field.

Guess, well ... yeah.

The rest of that stuff too.

Dem senator introduces bill to abolish Electoral College
"The idea of democracy is simple and obvious even to young kids on a playground - whoever gets the most votes should win. But way too often, that's not how our system of government is working," Merkley added in his statement.

Republican proposes Green 'Manhattan Project' in lieu of Green New Deal
Notice that the reporter can't get past the title of the bill (subtitute Green Marshall Plan, if you prefer) to see that there is NOTHING in Mr Alexander's 10 Point proposal, either expressed or implied, that is not waiting for inevitable endorsement by an army of "innovative" engineers, gang laborers, and carbon auditors for the Green New Deal --

except gold arbitrage, a Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and another Public Works Administration to rule them all.
