Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

The EU is making a huge mistake. They're going to get Brexit troublemakers in the European Parliament, they're going to get another six months of business disruption and uncertainty, they're going to get more right-wing nationalism, and they're going to get re-invigorated independence movements all over the place.

One suspects that Macron will take a fair degree of heat as this develops. Trading short-term gain for long term disaster.

And he already knows he's in trouble.

I'm not sure any of that is true. Even if they finally shove the UK out the door the drama is just starting. They might get a lot right-wing crazies or they might not, I haven't even looked at specific EUP polls. But the parliament is already chock full of right wing crazies anyways and the Brexit psychosis isn't worse than all the bellyaching about reugees that filled all airwaves previously.
Comedy option is a strong Labour showing that somehow pushes the Socialists into the top spot and accordingly call dibs on Junker's job.

Yesterday I did something unusual. I connected to Der Schmiegel. Top two featured articles were a requiem for Theresa May and ... panegyric essay to the EPP and M. Barnier, the reluctant "lead candidate" for EC president, whose only impediment to victory is Weber.

SPD has some work ahead.

That --who is frightened, who isn't-- remains to be seen.

The cause célèbre across Europe, for example, remains the fortunes of the elite in government-industry. Their personal struggles, represented as nations, to control the livelihoods of millions appears epitomized by BREXIT. "What happens next is uncertain" is an epitaph published by the Guardian just this morning in one substrate of internet data.

Indeed, every day that I open browser tabs on "newsworthy" current events I find sorrowful evidence of certain uncertainty, deprivation, ill-conceived social services, punishment, assaults, vanity --especially vanity-- and calumny as well as recommendations for resorts or recipes for "sustainable" meals. Seeing this portraiture laid out side-by-side to read comparatively, as if unrelated, is disconcerting to me.

Which suggests, attitudes of the masses of readers --by definition not elite-- toward the worlds they actually inhabit are infinitesimal. But the institutions which imprison their conceptions of well-being are big, untenable, and burlesque. Contingency is the costume of choice, of liberty.

Diversity is the key to economic and political evolution.
