Me and my friends, just outside the frame, having the coup of our lives.
One of Venezuela's best journalists reporting that today's action was planned for another day, and had strong military support - but they had to bring it forward because Guaido's arrest was imminent, and then the military backed out https://t.co/65PLT8tbLZ— Brian Winter (@BrazilBrian) 30. The Maduro government has so far been very restrained, letting the wannabe coup leader run free and merely arresting the footsoldiers he gathers. Most governments would be in full panic mode right now with cops and soldiers clearing the streets and giving CNN the very images they know pretend to have.
But then I wouldn't be surprised if this coup was indeed planned by the military. Just look at this:
A number of high ranking #MaduroRegime officials must now deal with the realization that despite their tweets of support & appearance with #Maduro on TV last night he knows they plotted against him. If Maduro remains in power what do you think their future holds? Here's a hint pic.twitter.com/MxesHUdJwo— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) 1. Mai 2019

"There's an erosion of support for Maduro from the military and it seems like Guaidó's trying to consolidate that," Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, one of the senior Democrats on the Foreign Relations Committee, told the Washington Examiner. "Our strategy was to ... get as much international support against the legitimacy of that regime and to allow the Venezuelans to make their own decisions on their government."
.@vladimirpadrino, @Ivanr_HD, @MaikelMorenoTSJ: You know well the role you played in planning today's move for democracy in Venezuela. You must now stand and do what is right for Venezuela. We, and the world, will hold you accountable for those Venezuelans who are injured today. https://t.co/w2MRrckVMN— John Bolton (@AmbJohnBolton) 1. Mai 2019

So, at least at the top they treat each other with some decency and moderation. And mostly on the ground level, too. Of course in the crowds there are always testoterone-filled idiots too young to remember bodies on the streets 30 years ago. Or people paid to cause trouble.
There is no official explanation why the Trump administration believed that the comical coup attempt by Juan Guaidó and his master Leopolo López would work. There are signs though that the government of President Nicolas Maduro set a trap. Several people in the top echelon of the Venezuelan government gave false promises that they would join the U.S. proxy side. They snookered Guaidó into launching his coup to let him fail.

It's too bad that no one has a bunch of undeniable proof in their possession showing how several key leaders around #Maduro have spent weeks negotiating a way to remove him while helping themselves...Who knows what would happen if something like that ever came out publicly pic.twitter.com/nB9pWEl2T0— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) 2.
