Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

What if they threw a coup and nobody turned up?

The Maduro government has so far been very restrained, letting the wannabe coup leader run free and merely arresting the footsoldiers he gathers. Most governments would be in full panic mode right now with cops and soldiers clearing the streets and giving CNN the very images they know pretend to have.

That is noteable. With the exception of one burning APC injuring a protester, I can think of no video that looks really bad for the government.

But then I wouldn't be surprised if this coup was indeed planned by the military. Just look at this:

And then everyone remembered a dentist appointment and only twenty-five(25) dudes showed up.

Rubio and Cardin: bi-partisan vanguard of boycott, divestment, and sanctions for fascists
"There's an erosion of support for Maduro from the military and it seems like Guaidó's trying to consolidate that," Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, one of the senior Democrats on the Foreign Relations Committee, told the Washington Examiner. "Our strategy was to ... get as much international support against the legitimacy of that regime and to allow the Venezuelans to make their own decisions on their government."

I don't really understand it, but this seems to be a characteristic of Venezuela's politics. Chavez was quite restrained after the previous coup, and Chavez himself seems to have been handled lightly after his own coup.

Chavez is not a dictator. Maduro is not a dictator.

My guess is that every side is trying to avoid repeating the caracazo. Partly because the lesson from that was that mayhem and massacres never stabilize a situation, partly because they don't want to be seen as the regime that killed it's own people.

So, at least at the top they treat each other with some decency and moderation. And mostly on the ground level, too. Of course in the crowds there are always testoterone-filled idiots too young to remember bodies on the streets 30 years ago. Or people paid to cause trouble.

Did Maduro set a trap?
There is no official explanation why the Trump administration believed that the comical coup attempt by Juan Guaidó and his master Leopolo López would work.

There are signs though that the government of President Nicolas Maduro set a trap. Several people in the top echelon of the Venezuelan government gave false promises that they would join the U.S. proxy side. They snookered Guaidó into launching his coup to let him fail.

Seems like the obvious answer. Little Marco hasn't thought of that yet:
