Meanwhile, both Spain has another headache from the Catalans: both Carles Puigedemont (former president in exile) and Oriol Junqueras (imprisoned ERC leader) have been elected. No doubt the Spanish establishment will try and stop them from taking their seats, but doing so puts Catalan independence on the European stage again.

In another example of "democracy with Spanish characteristics", Catalan MEPs Carles Puigdemont and Toni Comín were denied entry to the European Parliament for MEP induction. Supposedly, this was because Spain had not yet provided a list of elected MEPs - but strangely, those from non-Catalan parties were admitted.
