"Farmers expect from the EU Commission to give them access to the same innovative tools as their competitors in other parts of the world," [Secretary-general of the European Seed Association Garlich] said. [Environment Minister] Yeo said 60 containers stacked with contaminated waste were smuggled in en route to illegal processing facilities in Malaysia and will be sent back to their countries of origin. [...] The displayed items included cables from the U.K., contaminated milk cartons from Australia and compact discs from Bangladesh, as well as bales of electronic and household waste from the U.S., Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia and China. Yeo said the waste from China appeared to be garbage from France and other countries that had been rerouted after a ban imposed by China. In one case alone, Yeo said a U.K. recycling company exported more than 55,000 tons of plastic waste in about 1,000 containers to Malaysia over the past two years.

Guardian: An institute whose experts have occupied key positions on EU and UN regulatory panels is, in reality, an industry lobby group that masquerades as a scientific health charity, according to a peer-reviewed study. The Washington-based International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) describes its mission as "pursuing objectivity, clarity and reproducibility" to "benefit the public good". But researchers from the University of Cambridge, Bocconi University in Milan, and the US Right to Know campaign assessed over 17,000 pages of documents under US freedom of information laws to present evidence of influence-peddling. The paper's lead author, Dr Sarah Steele, a Cambridge university senior research associate, said: "Our findings add to the evidence that this nonprofit organisation has been used by its corporate backers for years to counter public health policies. ILSI should be regarded as an industry group - a private body - and regulated as such, not as a body acting for the greater good.

EU target of average car CO2 emissions is 95g per kilometer. [...] Why Does FCA Need to Buy Emissions Credits? In 2018, FCA's average CO2 emissions was estimated at 123 grams per kilometer, moreover, the automaker was sued by the US Department of Justice in 2017 for allegedly using software to mislead regulators into thinking its cars were compliant. FCA resolved those charges for $800 million, but it also recently recalled almost 1 million cars in the U.S. for violating emissions standards.
The two companies hold stakes in each other, but that alliance has been strained since the arrest of Nissan-Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn late last year. Ghosn has been charged in Japan with committing financial crimes while serving as CEO of Nissan, charges Ghosn and his lawyers vehemently deny.

Democratic presidential hopeful Jay Inslee wants the U.S. to shape all foreign policy decisions around a commitment to combat the climate crisis, including willingness to use tariffs, other trade incentives and international finance rules to compel other nations to reduce carbon pollution.
"Our goal is to re-establish American leadership in the fight against climate crisis and use all the tools in the international relations toolbox," Inslee told The Associated Press.
A source close to the French carmaker's board said Fiat Chrysler made the move after France sought to delay a decision on the deal in order to win the support of Nissan Motor Co , Renault's Japanese alliance partner. [...] The French government, which owns a 15% stake in Renault, had also pushed Fiat Chrysler and Renault for guarantees that France would not lose jobs, and for a dividend to be paid to Renault shareholders, including the government, people familiar with the talks said.
Fiat Chrysler stood to gain access to Renault's superior electric drive technology to meet ["]mandates for zero-emission["] cars. Renault would have had a share of the Italian-American company's lucrative Jeep sport utility vehicle and RAM pickup truck franchises. Renault's previous alliance and cross-shareholding [joint venture] with Japanese automaker Nissan had loomed all along as a potential snag. Nissan Chief Executive Hiroto Saikawa met last week with Renault Chief Executive Jean-Dominique Senard, and said he did not see "any particular negative aspect" to the proposed Renault-Fiat Chrysler merger.

Another problem is the dominance of state-owned enterprises in some industries. That creates a de facto cartel that China uses to extract concessions from foreign companies, who have no one else to make a deal with.
When states legalize pot for all adults, long-standing ["]medical marijuana["] take a big hit, in some cases losing more than half their registered patients [MARKET SHARE] in just a few years [...] Robin Beverett, a 47-year-old disabled Army veteran, said she resumed taking a powerful prescription mood stabilizer to control her anxiety and PTSD when the cost of her ["]medical marijuana["] nearly tripled after California began general sales [sic].
States see a "massive exodus" of ["]medical marijuana["] buyers when they legalize marijuana for all adults -- and then, in many cases, the remaining ones struggle, said David Mangone, director of government affairs for Americans for Safe Access.
["]Medical marijuana["] cardholders, for example, used to buy gummies or chocolate bars infused with 400 mg of THC, marijuana's high-inducing element. Now, edibles are capped at 100 mg for ["]medical marijuana["] buyers but cost the same or more. "Who, with any medical condition, needs to be eating 20 pieces of candy a day?" asked Erich Berkovitz, Oregon's last remaining state-licensed medical marijuana processor.
Getting a precise nationwide count of ["]medical marijuana["] buyers is impossible because California, Washington, and Maine don't keep data.
Ecuador has reportedly given the US military permission to use a Galapagos island as an airfield, angering critics in the South American country who say the agreement is unconstitutional. Under an apparent deal - denied by the US - with Ecuador's right-wing government, the Pentagon will use the tiny airport on San Cristobal island to "fight drug trafficking", defence minister Oswaldo Jarrin said. A US air force Boeing 707 plane carrying radar surveillance and a Lockheed P-3 Orion plane will patrol the Pacific Ocean, using the Galapagos as a launching off point, Latin American TV network Telesur reported. But according to Ecuador's 2008 constitution, "the establishment of foreign military bases or foreign installations for military purposes will not be allowed".
