I avoid mention of any specific case, as that is to play the lawyers at their own game. I am concerned almost solely with the perverse incentives of the system, which favour private gain (for the legal industry) over public good - the latter being almost entirely incidental to most proceedings. I should make clear that my remarks here are mostly relevant to civil proceedings.

Most defendants in criminal proceedings receive free legal aid, which is, of course, another gravy train for the legal profession, and which gives them a vested interest in the continuance of crime. Indeed the legal industry is parasitic on the criminal industry, and it is said that the chief difference between a criminal and his lawyer is often the education which affords the latter a privileged position within society.
