In the US the decline of farming (real farming, as opposed to corporate agriculture factories) has led to the decline of the small towns that supported them.  In the county I grew up in, the changes are a kick in the teeth.  The county seat has declined by 40%; all other towns by 50%.  Outside of the county seat, there are effectively no businesses.  Where there were six high schools, there are now three, and those are half the size they used to be.  Services in general, including health care, libraries, and Internet providers, are getting harder to find.  The population is aging rapidly, and many of the few young people remaining have no opportunities other than cooking meth behind the barn.  Rural America has become a pressure cooker of racism and fundamentalism fueled by ignorance, isolation, and desperation.  Guess where the hardest core of Trump support is?
