Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, criticized the British government's decision to greenlight a coronavirus vaccine as overly hasty on Thursday -- contending that the country's approval process relied too heavily on drugmaker data and lacked sufficient scrutiny. The remarks from Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, came after the United Kingdom on Wednesday approved the vaccine candidate from U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer and and its German partner BioNTech, becoming the first Western nation to authorize a Covid-19 vaccine. But in an interview on "The Takeout" podcast with CBS News correspondent Major Garrett, Fauci argued that the U.K. "kind of ran around the corner of the marathon and joined it in the last mile." He added: "They really rushed through that approval."

But hey, let's not forget the bragging rights.
A repentant Fauci states the British are good ... just one of those things where I sat down in front of the TV with a British TV station. And the first thing they said was, 'ahh we beat you guys. We beat the Americans to the punch.' And I kind of reacted back at him, when I think I probably should not have done." "The Brits are good," he added. "They know what they're doing. I mean, they're -- they're really pros. So that was just not really what I meant."
