Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Trump isn't going to resign and Toomey knows it.

Just another Republican trying to pretend the GOP isn't what the GOP is.

And Trump is going to try to stage another insurrection. Which is why the GOP clowns are playing for time and hoping he will rescue them from legal consequences.

My entirely contrarian take is that the storming of the Capitol is not actually different in nature from what GOP operatives were up to in Florid, only much more amateurish in execution. In fact if history is any guide the Democrats as a party would object much less stridently to a competent coup. Also this is plainly true:

No one says "defund the police" tonight, I write solemnly in a national newspaper, after the police invites the church of Qanon into the Capitol to defecate on the senate floor.

That's not contrarian at all. The GOP have always been the anti-democratic pro-privilege pro-violence pro-autocracy screw-the-peasants crush-dissent party. (See also "Law and OrderTM")

The only difference with Trump is that they're not even pretending to be anything else now. And now that they've revealed themselves, they're surprised by the pushback from tech and the corporates.

Still - further rioting, with added murder and shooting, are planned for the 16th onwards. Somehow I have a feeling that even though it will be very ugly, it still won't put them over the top.

Partly because they've shown their hand and lost the element of surprise ("Revolution on the 16th! Bring drugs and take selfies!")

But also because a collection of chubby fantasists with automatic weapons are no match for (most of) the National Guard.

And unlike a real civil war, they'll run away if they start dying in significant numbers and they realise that OMG this is nothing like the movies!!!1!

They have been, but the very nature of the Democratic party is to pretend otherwise. So Biden tells us he wants a strong GOP and the US discourse has been zeroed in on the person of Donald Trump, his Twitter account, and to a lesser extent on the Q cultists. But does any of that matter? Is any of that new? Inciting violence? The official reaction to BLM and the police riots want a word. Calling election results into question? Remember Russiagate and the unfaithful electors? The unending quest to find evidence of voting fraud?
However, the capitol police just outright handing the capitol over to a far right mob? That seems to be new and extremely serious. And Biden and Pelosi are hardly the people to deal with that. Or anything.
