New Study: Breakthrough Infections Generate "Super Immunity" to COVID-19

COVID-19 vaccination provides a foundation of protection that's enhanced by breakthrough infection; `the key is to get vaccinated.'

Breakthrough infections greatly enhance immune response to variants of the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a newly published study from Oregon Health & Science University.

The laboratory results, published online ahead of print in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), reveals that a breakthrough infection generates a robust immune response against the delta variant. Authors say the findings suggest the immune response is likely to be highly effective against other variants as the SARS-CoV-2 virus continues to mutate.

The study found that antibodies measured in blood samples of breakthrough cases were both more abundant and much more effective.

'ENORMOUS spread of omicron' may bring 140 MILLION new COVID infections to US in the next two months, MODEL PREDICTS
Researchers at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington's School of Medicine revised its COVID-19st modeling to include updated information about the omicron variant.

While meta-analyses have suggested previous variants cause about 40% of cases to be asymptomatic, [IHME director Dr. Chris] Murray said more than 90% of people infected with omicron may never show symptoms.

Researchers estimate that out of the millions of projected new daily infections, only about 400,000 cases may be reported, as most Americans infected with the virus won't feel sick and may never get tested [for COVID-19, influenza, bacterial or viral pneumonia, TB, etc]. At the peak of last year's winter SURGE in January, the country was reporting a little over 250,000 new cases [OF WHAT?] per day.

While infections are expected to skyrocket, the IHME model shows hospitalizations and deaths will be about the same. Researchers found the infection-hospitalization rate of omicron is about 90% to 96% lower than delta, and the infection-fatality rate is about 97% to 99% lower.
archived What this means, I believe, is US mortality is not rising at the same rate as SARS-CoV-2 δ infection ...
"In the past, we roughly thought that COVID was 10 times worse than flu and now we have a variant that is probably at least 10 times less severe," Murray said. "So, omicron will probably ... be less severe than flu but much more transmissible."
