Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

This reader's letter poses a fascinating question: Why are we so satisfied with Mark Rutte? Not even mentioning the #support affair, the scandal around Moria, the increasing inequality, increasing child poverty, doubling of the homeless and many other failures!

Is it the rally around the leader in a crisis factor?

According to Wikipedia his poll numbers went up in March last year and are really just now coming down.

VVD Campaign is about "leadership" during the pandemic ... all posters are just his person ... late in recent weeks there seems to be somewhat of a backlash ... the buck stops at his desk for the many failures.

This late tweet is typical of the criticism ...

The Dutch remember that Pinocchio Rutte is turning to the left. This means more asylum, more EU contributions, more lockdowns, more idiotic climate regulations. More taxes, less authority, less democracy. Do you want that ??? 🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱 No, that's clear.

Even the debates were less about economic policy looking forward ... more of a blame game looking to the past. Very little about change and decisions on Green energy and sustainability. Rutte even managed to propose building two new nuclear reactors. One in Groningen (!) and the other near Borssele in Zeeland.

Nuclear power is back on the political agenda, with a right-left divide

Clicked to see who Medusa was. Saw this:

"Voor Nederlandse waarden tegen alles wat links is.komt op voor de boeren en de vissers.
lid van FVD maar ben ook voor de PVV tegen Brussel"

No surprise given that the tweet is criticizing Rutte for not being right-wing enough. If that is the alternative, stick with Rutte.

As so often Rutte has demonstrated, he's Conservative with Tory values ... friendly with Boris Johnson and Donald Trump.

One can hardly be satisfied to compare Farage with BoJo and be happy with the latter. Decades ago, the Christian Democrats, D66 Liberal Democrats and Labour Party PvdA combination held power as centrists ... the Rutte administrations have followed Conservative policy on the economy, finances and trouncing on the less fortunate. No "Third Way" and no solidarity with the less educated working people. Inequality has grown... in Mediterranean countries he is hated for austerity and being "stingy" adding conditions to COVID Relief packages. Rutte is not well liked by Merkel nor Macron ... Rutte Power play failed with the Nordic nations.
