U.S. Embassy Jerusalem - The Palestinian Affairs Unit The U.S. diplomatic presence in Jerusalem, first established in 1844, was designated a Consulate General in 1928. In March 2019, the U.S. Consulate General was merged into U.S. Embassy Jerusalem. As part of U.S. Embassy Jerusalem, the Palestinian Affairs Unit (PAU) operates out of our historic Agron Road property to promote our overarching strategic objective of achieving a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Italics We seek to move the Palestinian economy to a model of healthy and sustainable private sector-led investment, growth and job creation. Through public diplomacy, we harness the power of U.S. higher education and promote U.S. values and interests, including through collaborative academic and professional exchanges, English language learning, and promoting women's empowerment and entrepreneurship development, as well as initiatives for young Palestinians to tap into career-enhancing opportunities involving science, technology and innovation. The Palestinian Affairs Unit is led by PAU Chief and Assistant Deputy Chief of Mission George Noll. In 1844, US President John Tyler appointed the first US consul to Jerusalem, Warder Cresson. This move was not unique to the US as the 19th century saw various Western powers jockeying for position often through missionary activities in the Ottoman Empire domains especially in the city of Jerusalem by, inter alia, extending protection to Christian churches and holy places in the city. Initially, Britain, France, Russia, Austria and the United States opened consulates in Jerusalem and were followed by others. A permanent US consular presence was as such established in 1857, in a building just inside the Jaffa Gate in the Old City. That building today houses the Swedish Christian Study Center.
