Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Meanwhile, in other Brexit news, the South African owned chicken food chain Nando's is having a "mare right now" and is being forced to close more than 40 outlets in the UK. Apparently it is having difficulties in its supply chain as a result of the UK workforce being severely depleted as a result of Brexit. This follows similar issues at KFC chicken food chain.

An exodus of European heavy goods vehicle drivers from British shores coupled with a shortage of operators in food processing centres has created an unpalatable labour crunch, and the sight of restaurants shuttering at a time when they actually have government permission to open.

No butterfly chicken burger? Just one more thing that nobody put on the side of a bus.

Brexit bites: Nando's closes restaurants amid chicken shortage

A poultry industry source said that warnings last month that EU worker rules and logistics issues would continue to hit food supply had not been heeded.

"We raised this issue with government many weeks ago and nothing significant has happened since, so it is clearly not going away," he said.

"We need new workers to come on board to cope with this demand, and while Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) have been helpful, the issue is with the Home Office.

"There are shortages fluctuating between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of staff, so we need some emergency changes get workers overseas who can fill this gap."

Or raise wages until British workers take the jobs.
We hear the same thing hear about illegal Mexican workers.

Lorry drivers? Train more British to hire. New workers? Offer £1000 bonus for recruits.

It isn't just that Britain is short 100K HGV drivers, it is short 1 Million workers for more menial production, harvesting and distribution work - pickers at Amazon warehouses, production line workers, seasonal farm workers, care home and hospitality workers etc.

These jobs used to be done by hard working east Europeans who were raised, educated, and trained at no cost to the UK. The sort Tories and Brexiteers like to look down on as potential welfare spongers or as increasing demand for NHS and educational services.

These jobs are beneath the British middle class and used to be done a longer time ago (by me) and Irish summer students who can now get better paid jobs in Ireland. Hopefully the east Europeans will now be able to find work in their home countries and contribute to GDP and prosperity there.

The UK has had an almost free ride on these foreign workers for very long time and given them nothing but contempt in return.Time for the Eton/Oxbridge students to get some summer jobs to see how he other half live.

Dutch Golden Age Gone

Migrant workers a solution to a staff shortage?

Before the third way and "globalization" profiting the larger multinationals we had the National employer's federation pressing politics to accept Italians and Greeks ... than we got the Spanish after Franco ... EEC expansion to incorporate more nations made choice of migrant workers easy to return home to friends and relatives ... then followed low paying wages to Moroccans and Turks on temporary work permits ... the EC comprises 27 nations with a population near half a billion ... what are we do to with an economic recovery to pre-pandemic levels ⁉️

Four Ways to Tackle Staff Shortages in The Netherlands

And worst of all lost benefits, some of these migrants dared to marry native Dutch girls ... the horror ... where is Geert when one needs him? 🆘

A one-time, one thousand pound incentive is an insignificant amount of money in this situation. Double their regular pay, provide suitable eating and sleeping accommodations, and restrooms, do not make drivers liable for the side effects of paperwork errors that they have no control over, etc. Even then, driving truck is not a picnic.
