You all probably know that the concept comes from Venice. But what I just learnt today, at the exhibition on Venice's 1600 year anniversary at the Palazzo Ducale, was that the traders objected to the restrictions and quarantine was lifted on two separate occasions.

Both times, capitalism won. And about a quarter of the population died.
