Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.
Over the years, the European Union has squandered the chance to bring more democracy to Turkey. The UK and France played a role in delays and the animosity by Israel to most neighbouring countries. The key to peace in Europe would have been not to follow the dictate of the US and NATO, but come to the conclusion Western Russia and Turkey are more important than many former Eastern European corrupt Soviet satellite nations now part of the EU-27. Kazakhstan is a lost cause, as is Georgia and the Ukraine will be more of a headache worse than Poland, Hungary, and Austria combined.

I highly suspect democracy is something that can be brought in. Just like you can't export revolution, you really can't export democracy.

The proper way would have been to prove by example the benefits of democracy - improved well being, equality, wealth, stability, predictability etc. Unfortunately neoliberals managed to destroy all that. Or rather, we allowed them to do so...
