Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

We have to remember that this whole debacle began as a ploy by Cameron to avoid a referendum on Scottish independence. Then Brexit became the new hot topic/distraction, pumped by Murdoch and others in the press for their own reasons of personal power. Indeed Boris rose to prominence on the basis of his biased reporting on the EU from Europe. It fed on nostalgia for the lost Empire. When feckless elites so ignore the national well being for personal gain disastrous outcomes like Brexit are too often the outcome. At least there is no written constitution in the UK for the Brexiteers to defile.

Meanwhile the USA is struggling with its own outbreak of racist expression where one party will sacrifice the whole form of government we have had since founding just to be able to maintain white control of politics on the local and national level, against the wishes of a majority of the electorate.

It is a sad day for the dream of stable representative government. Just more confirmation of the adage that Fascism is the default failure mode of Liberal
Democracy.

I don't think it was about avoiding another Scottish independence referendum so much as a vain attempt to avoid a split in the conservative party and the rise of UKIP.
