Surprise, surprise.
It's a tactic Putin has been using for years in his various wars. When a city is under siege, they agree to humanitarian corridors then start shelling once the refugees start evacuating. Ha ha ha, gotcha.

Works every time; obviously the besieged don't believe a word the Russians say, but what choice have they got?

Ukraine takes opposition media off air - 112 Ukraine |WikiPedia |

112 Ukraine (Ukrainian: 112 Україна) is a private Ukrainian TV channel which provides 24-hour news coverage. 112 Ukraine is available on satellites AMOS 2/3, via the DVB-T2 network, and was also available in packages of all major Ukrainian cable operators until it was banned from broadcasting in Ukraine in February 2021.

In a joint statement with NewsOne and ZiK, 112 Ukraine commented on its ban, calling it "a political reprisal against objectionable media." Russian Senator for United Russia Aleksey Pushkov claimed that "By shutting down opposition television channels, Zelensky acknowledged his inability to withstand political competition."

In a written statement, a spokesperson for the European Union's Foreign Affairs High Representative Josep Borrell stated "while Ukraine's efforts to protect its territorial integrity and national security, as well as to defend itself from information manipulation are legitimate", it added that "any measures taken should be proportional to the aim".

The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine said on 3 February that "the United States supports Ukraine's efforts yesterday to counter Russia's malign influence, in line with Ukrainian law, in defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Following the ban on their channels, journalists from 112 Ukraine, NewsOne and ZIK established another TV channel, entitled "The First Independent TV Channel" (Ukrainian: "Першого незалежного"), which was shut down an hour after it launched.

On 5 March 2021, YouTube blocked 112 Ukraine's live broadcasts, although it did not take any action against "The First Independent TV Channel".

Last tango in Moscow

Two Sundays ago I wrote in the Observer about the last remaining Russian independent TV station, Dozhd ("TV Rain"), and the irrepressible spirit of Natalya Sindeyeva, the woman who pioneered and ran it. Keeping the station alive had cost Sindeyeva her home and her marriage and her health and her security. A dozen years ago when she launched Dozhd she had been a vivid Russian celebrity, a "dancing queen" of Moscow's elite party circuit, now her mugshot is posted on street corners as a "foreign agent". The defiant struggles of Dozhd to stay on air and to continue to report the truth in Russia despite years of intimidation and sanction from the Kremlin were the subject of an inspiring documentary, "F@ck This Job (Tango with Putin)", made by London-based Vera Krichevskaya, which was released in the UK last week and broadcast on the BBC.

A few days after "F@ck this Job" came out, on Friday, the decade-long defiance of Dozhd was silenced, at least for a while, by a brutal new law, passed unanimously in the Russian parliament, which bans news organisations from reporting anything except state approved press releases
