Sinn Fein campagning on "European solidarity with Ireland":

And Johnson comparing Brexit with the Ukrainian resistance? Ukrainians are having none of it.

Brexiteers love to present themselves as the long suffering victims of domination by an evil European empire which they have compared to the Soviet Union and Fourth Reich. Nigel Farage has expressed his puzzlement that Ireland would not prefer a benign relationship with Britain rather than subjugation by Europe. He has no idea what subjugation to Britain really felt like on the receiving end. When you are used to being the dominant imperial power, equality can feel like subjugation, but that does not make it so.

Makes you think of another group of rulers on the other side of Europe...

TBH, France also has a problem of "no longer being a dominant imperial power", to the irritation of many pf other EU countries - OK, this is also a Macron temperament issue. But, overall, we seem to be getting off it a little faster than our neighbors from across the channel. French language no longer being universal has helped bringing the point home. And of course, Erasmus.

A little pomposity allied to a gallic shrug of the shoulders is part of your charm! Where would we be without a little French hauteur?
