Ukraine's president says he hopes to secure heavy weapons at talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin in Kyiv on Sunday, supplies that he said were vital for Ukraine to eventually retake Russian-occupied territory.

"As soon as we have [more weapons], as soon as there are enough of them, believe me, we will immediately retake this or that territory, which is temporarily occupied," he told reporters.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin will visit his war-torn country on Sunday.

While taking questions during a press conference in Kyiv Saturday, Zelenskyy said that both officials will be arriving on April 24.

The White House, the National Security Council and the State Department have declined to comment on Zelenskyy's remarks. The Pentagon will not speak to the claim from the Ukrainian president, according to two defense officials.
