Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Out of curiosity, what makes Britain a "vital link in the global network"?

Her economy is big, but smaller than Japan and Germany. Britain used to have an empire, but it is gone with the wind. Political system may be worse even than the US system. International treaty arrangements are a mess. Spends less on defense than India. Can't even manage to keep her own royal family under control.

My view is that the tendency to view things through the rose-colored glasses of ancient history boosts Britain way above her actual position. It's all about the US and China now; everything else is a sideshow.
