US State-Affiliated NewsGuard Targets Consortium News

The Pentagon and State Dept.-linked outfit, with an ex-N.S.A. and C.I.A. director on its board, is accusing Consortium News of publishing "false content" on Ukraine, reports Joe Lauria.

NewsGuard set itself up in 2018 as a judge of news organizations' credibility. The front page of NewsGuard's website shows that it is "partners" with the State Department and the Pentagon, as well as with several major corporations, such as Microsoft. The nature of these "partnerships" is not entirely clear.

NewsGuard is a private corporation that can shield itself from First Amendment obligations. But it has connections to formerly high-ranking U.S. government officials in addition to its "partnerships" with the State Dept. and the Pentagon.

Slate reported in January 2019 that NewsGuard:

"struck a deal with Microsoft to incorporate those ratings into the tech giant's Edge browser as an optional setting. That's when the Guardian noticed that the Mail Online had been tagged by NewsGuard with a `red' label, a reliability score of 3 out of 9, and the following warning: `Proceed with caution: This website generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability.'

The US EU relationship is not working | by Frank Schnittger on Jul 17th, 2010 |

The view from Washington is that communication with Europe on a range of crucial issues is difficult because the EU still lacks "a clear foreign policy apparatus".
Richard Haass, head of the Council on Foreign Relations, an influential think-tank in Washington, criticised Brussels for the appointments of Herman Van Rompuy as President of the European Council and Baroness Ashton of Upholland as High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

"Europe created these posts to speak for the collective as a whole. But from the perspective of many Americans, rather than building up someone of the stature of [the former Nato Secretary-General] Javier Solana, it looks as though Europe has retreated," he said.

Analysts said that the EU was naive to expect a sea change in US foreign policy just because George Bush had been replaced in the White House.

NewsGuard a successor to PropOrNot as disinformation platform

"Fake News": The Trojan Horse for Silencing Alternative News and Reestablishing Corporate News Dominance | Project Censored - Oct 2019 |

In our most recent book, Censored 2020: Through the Looking Glass, Chapter 8, scholars Emil Marmol and Lee Mager showed how big tech firms and social media companies are taking advantage of widespread calls to "fight fake news" by legitimizing censorship of online content, de-platforming critical voices on the Right and Left. This censorship effectively highjacks efforts to promote media literacy by making control of the online flow of news and information a matter of "artificial intelligence" (in the form of proprietary algorithms).

When it comes to protecting the integrity of the news we receive, though, we need less "A" and more "I." Marmol and Mager delve into the controversies and media distractions of Russiagate as well as the deep state and military-industrial complex involvement in social media companies' fact-checking and content restriction policies, noting significant conflicts of interest. They conclude that we must speak out against the weaponization of "fake news" as a concept, while supporting a free press focused on the public good and promoting support for whistleblowers as vital sources of truth.

The Contemporary Disinformation Ecosystem: Impact and Solutions | Spring 2018 |

An egregious case of careless reporting occurred when the Washington Post reported that a website called PropOrNot had identified two hundred websites acting as Russian propaganda. PropOrNot, an anonymous organization, was cited as an "expert" organization even though the source was highly secretive. The Intercept noted that the report did not cite one verifiable source, and the funding of the organization is unknown (Norton and Greenwald). Chen also wrote a criticism of the Washington Post article, citing the methodology used in determining "Russian Propaganda" included any outlet that criticized "The United States, Barack Obama, Clinton, the European Union, Angela Merkel, NATO, [etc]" ("The Propaganda About Russian Propaganda"). Objective observers must be careful not to confuse criticism with promoting disinformation, especially since misinterpretations can further degrade the quality of reporting, which lacks an investigative edge, and could even be classified as misinformation itself.

PropOrNot is based on Garrett M. Graff, "A Guide to Russia's High Tech Tool Box for Subverting US Democracy," Wired, August 13, 2017.
