Nowhere, however, was the origin of the crucial isotopes mentioned....

Opinion piece published in The Guardian ...

2023 has shown us the misery big-power politics creates. Here's how we can do things differently | By Margus Tsahkna - FM Estonia |

Our rules-based world is the triumph of peace over war. At least, that's how the story has been told for the past eight decades. The promise of "never again" has been the raison d'etre for global institutions such as the United Nations and the international criminal court (ICC), which all like to trace their history to the moment when nations emerged from the ruins of the second world war and forged a lasting peace. Rising freedom and prosperity was understood to be the byproduct.

Yet increasing numbers of people around the world no longer believe in that story. Its promise has been broken with the return of full-scale aggression by Russia, along with deteriorating violence and instability around the world. We are witnessing the horrors that this system was supposed to have long ago eliminated.

With backing of NATO and Europe, did Zelenskyy expected a walk in the park?

jta | US, Ukraine alone oppose Russian UN vote condemning honors to Nazis, 8 Nov 2019
[...]
Last year, Stefanie Amadeo, deputy US representative to the economic and social council, told CBS News: "We condemn without reservation all forms of religious and ethnic intolerance or hatred at home and around the world. However, due to this resolution's overly narrow scope < wipes tears > and politicized nature, and because it calls for unacceptable limits on the fundamental freedom of expression, the United States cannot support it," she continued.

The resolution's full title is: "Combating glorification of Nazism, neo-nazism and other practices that contribute to fueling contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance."

Addressing the Middle East, the Assembly took up the report "Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources" (document A/78/467), adopting the eponymous resolution by a recorded vote of 158 in favour to 6 against (Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Nauru, Palau, United States), with 13 abstentions.
[...]
In an echo of last year's annual spirited debate, the Assembly adopted a text on combating the glorification of Nazism (document A/78/478), as amended and as a whole by a recorded vote of 118 in favour to 49 against, with 14 abstentions. By its terms, the Assembly expressed alarm at the spread in many parts of the world of various extremist political parties, ideologies and groups of a racist or xenophobic character, including neo-Nazis and skinhead groups, and firmly condemned incidents that glorify and promote Nazism.
[...]
In other notable action, the Assembly adopted a resolution on the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination (document A/78/479) by a recorded vote of 172 in favour to 4 against (Israel, Micronesia, Nauru, and the United States), with 10 abstentions (Cameroon, Guatemala, Kiribati, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, South Sudan, Togo, Tonga, and Tuvalu), by which it stressed the urgency of ending the Israeli occupation and achieving a lasting peace settlement between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.

ft OpEd | Wally Adeyemo: The US is ready to impose sanctions on foreign financial institutions when others don't, 21 Dec tools
The writer is deputy secretary of the US Treasury
[....]
Today, the president will issue an executive order authorising the use of sanctions targeting foreign financial institutions that help Russia's military industrial complex. This fulfil[l]s a longstanding promise: as long as Russia's invasion continues, we will level sanctions and export controls that undermine the Kremlin's efforts to stockpile goods and technologies. We will not hesitate to use the new tools provided to take decisive and surgical action against institutions that facilitate the supply of Russia's war machine. This announcement makes clear that those financing and facilitating the transactions of goods that end up on the battlefield will face severe consequences.
[...]
With the new order, we are ready and able to move when others don't. Financial institutions that continue to process transactions to Russia have a clear choice to make—stop all transactions from customers selling critical goods, or ensure these goods are not benefiting Russia's war machine. [OR ELSE], you risk losing access to the US financial system.
