Biden administration quietly resumes deportations to Russia
The Biden administration has quietly resumed deportations to Russia, an apparent reversal of the position adopted after Russia invaded Ukraine just over a year ago, when such removals were suspended, the Guardian has learned. Immigration advocates were taken by surprise when a young Russian man, who came to the US fleeing Vladimir Putin's efforts to mobilize citizens to fight in Ukraine, was abruptly deported at the weekend from the US back to Russia.

Being quite cynical, I think the reason Ukrainians are welcome in EU is that it would be too hard to convince the populations that money and weapons must flow to Ukraine while refugees were stopped at the border. Though if judged necessary for the war effort I suspect young Ukrainians will be sent back to Ukraine.
I don't remember which ghoulish republican it was that argued that supporting Ukraine was a good investment because as long as the west provides arms and money they will kill Russians. But I suspect that is the US real reason, since it can hardly be any principled support of sovereignity or being anti-imperialist or anti-invasion, coming from a government where the only ones who has been punished for the last twenty years of invasions, mass murder and torture are the ones who has exposed the brutality. And since the US bragged openly about coordinating the EU response, I guess US motives are the real motives, with the EU free to come up with motivations on why the US lead will be followed, but no real power to affect the course. Or vassalage, as the European Council on Foreign Relations puts it.
Just to be clear, I think providing refugees with safety is of very high importance, including of course those fleeing the war in Ukraine. I am just very cynical about our governments motives, considering the coordinated efforts to drown non-white refugees in the Mediterranean and unwillingness to even provide safe harbour for Russian draft dodgers.
