Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Mark Rutte: North's quiet rebel | Politico - June 8, 2018 |

The Dutch prime minister leads the backlash against pragmatic, prudent anti-populists. ⁉️ [ridiculous .. Rutte is the most effective leading opportunist in politics and populism - no political view for Dutch society]

Angela Merkel may have closed the coffin lid on Emmanuel Macron's EU reform plans, but it was Mark Rutte who dug the grave.

Before the chancellor said France (and the rest of the eurozone) could forget any lingering hope that Germany will pursue a great leap forward in eurozone integration, the Dutch prime minister was leading the charge against exactly the same thing.

He's assembled a group of like-minded, smaller EU nations wary of measures that could force them to ask more of their taxpayers. And as one of the EU's elder statesmen, Rutte's at the forefront.

Credited with breaking the populist wave by fending off his far-right challenger Geert Wilders in a national election last spring, Rutte, 51, has since emerged as the most prominent liberal voice on the European Council -- and a top contender to replace Donald Tusk as its president in 2019.

In the shorter term, however, the Dutch leader -- prime minister since 2010 -- needs allies now that the U.K. is heading out the door. With Brexit, the Netherlands is losing a partner it has long relied upon to uphold a free-trade, market-liberal, fiscally strict vision of the EU.

Rutte's solution: To forge links with Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania -- and push back against the French and the Germans.

Commentators have had great fun coming up with names for the Dutch-led alliance: the Hanseatic League 2.0; the North Sea Alliance; the Gang of Eight; the countries not occupied by the Roman Empire; Mark Rutte and the Seven Dwarves; the beer drinkers (as opposed to the wine drinkers of the south).

For anyone it becomes clear Mark Rutte has a personal stake in foreign policy and a strong leader representing Nordic and Baltic states in a stronger NATO and in aggression against Russia and Putin. A next career position in the EU is out of the question as he made too many enemies ... so Rutte aligned his ambition with London and Washington DC ... hoping to land a position as SG of NATO to succeed his friend Jens Stoltenberg. Hell ... war happens and people die ... shrugs shoulders ... strong supporter of Trump and Johnson to let Covid-19 fly and do its thing ... herd immunity hits the elderly hardest, but they already have one foot in the grave anyway. No big economic loss. AI predicts. Technocrat with as much empathy for people as a robot. Compulsive liar ... could shake hands with Tony Blair. Poor memory and deleted all digital messages as Prime Minister.

Does Rutte have a big enough stash and more donors to start a new career as executive director of three foundations and a tinkie tank or two?

13 Years of Conservative Rule under rightwing Mark Rutte has ended in deep misery.

Violent anti-lockdown protesters are idiots, says Dutch PM | The Guardian |

Mark Rutte condemns `pure violence' at protests over weekend, as thousands also gather in Brussels

So Rutte took his "presidential" power to fire Mrs. Mona Keijzer (CDA)from his cabinet.  Mona Keijzer has ended her prominent membership of the Christian Democrats and has joined the Farmers Party of Caroline van der Plas (BBB) and a potential candidate for Prime Minister and enter "het Torentje".

Shots fired in The Netherlands on driving farmers. No self-defence, this is just escalation on behalf of the Dutch 'government'. True colours are all out. #boerenprotesten #politiegeweld #DutchFoodYourFood

Rightwing governments will fail and hopefully fall to a more social-democratic leadership who will refuse to fight proxy wars for the empires still about.

The unrest in The Netherlands has led to PM Rutte live firing at the farmer protest which by itself was a culmination of years of anger and poor communication of policy ...
