Algerian President: We reject any military intervention in Niger | Aawsat |

Algeria is categorically against any military intervention in Niger, Ennahar TV said late on Saturday citing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

"A military intervention could ignite the whole Sahel region and Algeria will not use force with its neighbours," Tabboune said in an interview with local media.

He added, "We are ready to extend a helping hand to Niger, and Algeria will not use force with its neighbors."

The army's seizure of power in Niger shook the Sahel region, the seventh coup in West and Central Africa in three years.

Niger is one of the poorest regions of the world and of strategic importance to world powers. Senior defense officials of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have drawn up a plan for military intervention if Niger's coup leaders do not reinstate elected President Mohamed Bazoum by Sunday, threatening more conflict in a region already battling a bloody Islamist insurgency. Bazoum is being held by military personnel at his residence in Niamey.
