kommersant | Nuland in Niger announced the risks in case of inviting Wagner PMC, 8 Aug
Acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland is on a visit to Niger. She told reporters that the rebels are aware of the "risks to sovereignty" if the private military company Wagner is invited.

"The people who have taken these actions here are very aware of the risks to their sovereignty when Wagner is invited," said Ms. Nuland (quoted by AFP).

The undersecretary has held meetings with Niger's military leaders, but has yet to make progress on preventing a coup. "These conversations were extremely frank and sometimes very difficult," the diplomat added. The rebels did not accept US proposals to try to restore democratic order, she said. She also failed to meet with ousted President Mohamed Bazum.

Rebels have been in control of Niger since late July. The economic community of West African countries, which includes Niger, and many Western countries called on the military to release the president and return him to power. ECOWAS threatened Niger with military intervention. According to the Associated Press, the rebels have already turned to the Wagner PMC during a meeting in Mali (the state supports the Niger rebels, PMC fighters operate in this country by invitation). Prime Minister of Niger Uhumudu Mahamadu, who is in France after the coup, believes that the presence of PMCs in Niger is impossible. According to him, to cross the border from Mali, they would need to destroy Islamic groups, which "has not happened in four years."

Wagner boss expresses 'joy' over Victoria Nuland
Wagner chief Evgeny Prigozhin says he is proud of the members of his private military company as simply mentioning their name can compel Washington to reassess its positions. Acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland recently urged Niger's new military government not to enlist the help of the Russian contractors.

Speaking to journalists over the phone on Tuesday [07.08.23], Prigozhin was asked to comment on Nuland's personal visit to Niger and her advice to the new government not to strike any deals with Wagner.

"I am proud of the boys from Wagner," replied Prigozhin. "Just the thought of them makes ISIS and Al Qaeda small, obedient, silky boys. And the US has recognized a government that it did not recognize yesterday just to avoid meeting the Wagner PMC in the country."

"This brings joy, Mrs. Nuland," he quipped.

On Wednesday, a Nigerian delegation led by the former Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi, met the junta's leader, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani.
The Honorable Muhammad Sanusi II was delighted with the conviviality that prevailed during the exchanges with the President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland. "We received a good appreciation from him. We will return to Nigeria and we will inform the President of the message in our possession which is the first of its kind between Heads of State," he said.
The former emir was one of few people allowed to meet Tchiani.
the-star.co.ke | 'Leave Niger to decide its future': Religious leader warns against military intervention (10.08.23)
In particular, the leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church from Nigeria, Primate Elijah Ayodele warned the US not to interfere in the internal affairs of the country and let the people of Niger decide their future without any outside pressure.

"Leave Niger to decide its future. I use this moment to appeal to international communities not to attempt shedding blood in the Republic of Niger in a move toward restoring the ousted president," he said.

Ayodele's warnings came as Acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland met with Niger's military leadership [07.08.23] for more than two hours of "very frank and at times quite difficult" talks in Niamey.

When Nuland met with the coup leaders earlier this week, she was denied access to both Tchiani[Tiani] and Bazoum. A separate delegation comprised of ECOWAS, the United Nations and the African Union was barred from coming at all.
