Welcome to European Tribune. It's gone a bit quiet around here these days, but it's still going.

Post 9/11 Sharon and Netanyahu declared Palestinians are terrorists and provoked endless air strikes on Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria. A very complex situatie to declare instant peace between Israel and Saudi Arabia ... Mission Improbable. The White House must be hard pressed for any foreign policy succes ahead of an election year ... pacifying the Jewish diaspora? Can't beat Trump who has gained hero of Israel status by his rightwing backers of AIPAC ... any proposal by Biden will be torn-up after November 2024.

Lapid meets UAE foreign minister in Italy, amid hiatus in high-level visits | TOI - Aug. 8, 2023 |

No senior Emirati officials have been in Israel since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government came to power in late December.

Lapid, along with his wife, is in Italy for vacation this week on a flight paid for by his Yesh Atid party.

According to the Kan public broadcaster, Knesset sources say the funded trip was not approved by the ethics committee. Lapid's office said he received all the necessary approvals. [meeting with the enemy?]

Netanyahu was due to visit the UAE shortly after returning to office as his first state visit, but the trip was canceled after National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir's visit to the Temple Mount holy site in Jerusalem, which Abu Dhabi denounced as a "storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque courtyard."

Bin Zayed visited Jerusalem in September, marking two years since the signing of the Abraham Accords, the US-brokered agreement that normalized ties between Israel and the UAE and Bahrain. Morocco followed suit and normalized relations with Israel soon after.

The Emirati foreign minister was also in Israel in March 2022 for the Negev Summit along with Bahraini, Moroccan, Egyptian and US counterparts, where they agreed to form a regional forum to discuss regional issues. Lapid initiated that forum, which has yet to reconvene.

Keeping Israeli cabinet minister at a arm's length ... conflicts with re-election ambition in rightwing America.

US pushes back on White House invite claim as PM seen trying to raise visit's profile | TOI - Aug. 8, 2023 |

The Biden administration on Wednesday doubled down on its pushback against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's persistent claim that US President Joe Biden has invited him to the White House, an apparent effort to raise the meeting's profile.

"We still anticipate that the president will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu sometime in the latter part of this year in the fall, and [that] it'll be somewhere in the United States," White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said in response to a question on the matter during a phone briefing with reporters.

The answer further pointed to a possible meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's high-level week in September, which both Netanyahu and Biden plan to attend. However, such a meeting would be one of many the US president will hold that week and ostensibly be lower profile than the Oval Office photo-op that the Israeli premier likely envisions as he seeks to boost his diplomatic bona fides that have taken a hit due to his far-right coalition partners.

After the leaders spoke on July 17, Netanyahu's office issued a readout saying that Biden had invited him to meet in the US. The White House readout made no mention of an invitation and a source familiar with the issue, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Netanyahu was the one who raised the idea of a meeting on the call and that Biden merely responded that he'd be willing to do so but that no further details were discussed.

indicates the admin is composing a NEW name for TRUMP-tainted Abraham Accords. Because name recognition and borrored interst is tricky business, the admin is uncertain if the poll smoke accurately describes registered (R) voter allegiance to TRUMP or Israel's covenant wit gott.
